Bakırköy, one of the oldest areas in Istanbul, the district age refers to 1500 years old has many historical and touristic places with its location on the coast of the city and its history dating back to ancient times.

The area, which was named Makriköy during the Byzantine period and Bakırköy after the proclamation of the Republic, became a more crowded neighbourhood after a railway was built in the 19th century.

Bakirkoy is bounded from the east by Zeytinburnu, from north by Bahcevler and Kucukcekmece districts, and from the west by Avcilar.

Bakırköy, considered for long time as a middle-class residential area; Over time, and because of its vital institutions became a destination for the bourgeoisieand merchants, and now become for the elite in Turkish community.

 

Historical seeing sights

There are many historical and touristic places in Bakırköy that reflects a great civilizations for both Ottoman and Byzantine eras.

There are many sights that you can visit in Bakirkoy such as Fil Dam which backs to ancient times, Yeşilköy Lighthouse, Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion, Surp Stepanos Armenian Church, Hilmi Nakipoğlu Cameras Museum are some of the historical and touristic places of Bakırköy.

 

The Armenian Church

Dzinunt Surp Asdvadzadzni Armenian Orthodox Church, which was built in the first quarter of the 1800s, specifically in 1831 in the Baruthane district of Bakırköy. The church was built on the monastery land taken from the Greeks, upon the request of the Armenian workers for a place of worship in the Zeytinburnu Iron Factory. In 1884 The building, which was built as masonry instead of a wooden church was reopened for worship.

It is considered an attractive sights especially during religious holidays, it is still a place of worship for Armenians till now.

 

The Lighthouse

Formerly known as Ayios Stefanos Lighthouse and now known as Yeşilköy Lighthouse, it was built in the mid-1800s, it has been titled of the oldest lighthouse of the Bosphorus, now hosts a fish restaurant located under it.

It was the first structure that ships passing through the Bosphorus encounters is Yeşilköy Lighthouse.

 

Istanbul Aviation Museum

Located in the Yeşilköy district of Bakırköy, where many aircraft from the history of aviation in Turkey are exhibited, is away 6 km from Atatürk Airport. It is a museum that can be visited by those who are interested in military and civil aviation or who want to see the planes used in the history of Turkey.

 

Istanbul Aquarium

Istanbul Aquarium is located in the Florya district in Bakirkoy, near to seashore, and also close to Ataturk International Airport.

Istanbul Aquarium is the largest aquatic zoo in the Middle East, and has been classified as one of the largest aquariums in Europe in terms of size, area and number of marine life.

It includes about 15,000 kinds of fish and 1500 of other marine creatures like reptiles and amphibians such as crocodiles, frogs and snakes.

These types of animals from different natural regions to which they belong, such as the Red Sea, Antarctica, the Amazon, the Gulf of Panama and the Pacific Ocean.

Marine life in Istanbul Aquarium is also classified according to its presence in the seas surrounding Turkey, namely the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and Marmara sea.

 

Florya Park

One of the biggest gardens in Istanbul, The garden which is decorated with the most beautiful tulips in different colours, and includes several fun activities, especially for young children, such as children's games, car racing track, sports running track, plant nursery.

 

Bakirkoy Botanic Garden

A wonderful botanical garden in Bakirkoy area, amid aromatic trees and large children's playgrounds, and contains statues in the form of dinosaurs that are closer to the real one.

It contains various activities such as riding water skis in the lake in the middle of the park, also you can take your best photos at the golden statues that are distinguished by their wonderful embodiment of winged horses.

The Feli Effendi Race course, which was built on an area of 596 acres, with a length of 2020 meters, and there are two main tracks for the first race, the grass track with a length of 1870 meters, and the second is a sand track with a length of 1720 meters.

 

In Turkey they called Markets by *Bazar* and one of the most famous and strangest markets in all Istanbul, the market that used to have 6 gates, but now it becomes just only 2.

This bazar is held every Saturday and it had been constructed under the ground, under Fakhry Korturk street, there you can find all the brans like Zara, Pull & Bear and all other brands with unexpected prices you will never imagine

Ataturk Airport

Bakirkoy district also contains one of the most important landmarks of Istanbul, which is Ataturk International Airport, whose vast areas are being transformed into the largest public park in Turkey

In 1911, a small apron with two hangars was built in Yeşilköy, Istanbul, for the Turkish Armed Forces, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded Türk Tayyare Cemiyeti (Turkish Aircraft Company, today THK Türk Hava Kurumu) in 1925. In 1933 the Türkiye Devlet Hava Yolları started its flights with two Curtiss Kingbird aircraft. Flights from Istanbul to Ankara and Athens began. Afterwards the small apron was expanded and a new passenger terminal was built. This is considered the beginning of the airport's 86-year history. It was originally named Yeşilköy Airport. In the 1980s, it was renamed Atatürk International Airport. It served more than 60 million passengers in 2015.

Istanbul Atatürk Airport was replaced in regards to commercial passenger functions by the newly constructed Istanbul Airport, in April 2019, in order to meet Istanbul's growing domestic and international air traffic demand as a source, destination, and transit point.
