The history of the Beykoz district dates back to 700 BC, as the history of the region extends back to the Greek civilization, as the Thracians and the Greeks were the first to historically settle that upper region of the Bosphorus. The ancient name of it was "Amicus or Amnikos" after the name of the Thracian king, and throughout ages the people who settled there were changed several times, as many invaders from all over the Black Sea and beyond, such as: Thracians, Bithynas, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and finally Turks, settled in this area, due to the huge fisheries in the Bosphorus so it was an opportunity to plunder communities the richest stable around the Marmara Sea.

As for the name "Beykoz", it originated in the period of the Ottoman Empire and is consist into two ancient words: Bey, which means: prince or master. And the word Koz, which means a village in the Persian language, or one of the types of walnut, later became as one word “Beykoz.”.

Beykoz was the preferred region of the Ottoman sultans and nobles and their court during the Ottoman period to practice hunting and escape from the noise of the city, where the fishing huts in küçüksu, the water fountains and mosques that adorn the villages along the coast, are the remains of that rich and ancient Ottoman era. In the modern era, Beykoz became an independent district in 1928, and it remains in its administrative status to this day.
